Here are some photos from the 2016 Student Surgery Leadership Weekend. They feature our Keynote Speaker, Sandra Wong; a team building exercise at the Clinical Simulation Center and our tour of the Big House
Dr. Sandra Wong is the Chair of Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. She spoke on topic "What I'm Looking for in a Resident"; summary slides of her presentation are available under the sub-heading "Summary Slides 2016"
The University of Michigan Clinical Simulation Center (UMCSC) is an innovative instructional environment and learning laboratory providing challenging, immersive simulation training for physicians, nurses and other health care professionals at the University of Michigan. Its mission is to advance best practices in healthcare education and improve patient safety through the development of effective simulation-based instruction, robust assessment and rigorous research. Dr. Oliver Varban created an activity for this year's participants that involved teams of four individuals, each working with one hand and limited materials, to suture scraps of felt together to create a tube mimicing a section of colon. Each team of four then joined with other teams until ultimately a 30 foot length of colon was created. The final step was to test the colon for leaks by running a AA battery through vthe entire length. The operation was successful as the battery made it through the colon without slipping through the suture.
As in previous years, this years participants enjoyed dinner at the Junge Champions Center and a tour of the Big House. Participants were able to visit the lockeroom, skyboxes and suites and kick the football around on the same turf the Wolverines play on! There is one special photo from our friends down south however everyone's a Wolverine when you're in the Big House!
